The European Union’s (EU) End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) Directive (2000/53/EC) places a responsibility on producers of vehicles exported to and manufactured in the EU to eliminate certain heavy metals and meet re-use, recycling, and recovery targets. It implements stringent standards for the facilities involved in the dismantling and environmentally sound treatment of vehicles.

IMDS is a joint development comprised of over 14 of the world's major automotive manufacturers including Audi, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo.
